The retired neurosurgeon has ever held public office, but was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2008. Ben Carson, 63, was the first surgeon to successfully separate twins conjoined at the head. Carson told supporters he saw "no path forward"and he suspended his campaign shortly after the March 2, 2016, Super Tuesday voting.
